Operation Swing State
2026 MidtermsChicago & Chicagoland

Volunteer for Democrats from Illinois. Win the midterms next door.

Illinois is not a swing state, so in the 2026 midterms your time has the most impact in the close races one state over. Ride a free carpool to canvass in Wisconsin or Michigan, phone bank from home, or write postcards. No experience needed.

Political volunteer opportunities in Chicago

If you live in Chicago or the suburbs and want to volunteer for Democrats before the 2026 midterms, you have three options: ride a free weekend carpool to canvass in Wisconsin, Michigan, or Iowa, make calls at a phone bank, or write postcards at a local postcard party. No experience or car is needed.

  • Carpool to a swing-state canvass. Free weekend carpools take Chicago volunteers to knock doors for Democrats in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Iowa. Carpool hubs have included Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Oak Park, Evanston, and Highland Park. Most Wisconsin sites are a 60- to 90-minute drive, Michigan is longer, and some Iowa shifts are drive-directly, so check the listing. See how canvass carpools work, or read Canvassing 101 if it is your first time.
  • Make calls at a phone bank. Most phone banks are in-person calling parties hosted by partner groups around Chicagoland, where a host trains everyone in the room. A few are virtual, so you can call from home after a live Zoom training. The phone bank guide covers what you need.
  • Write postcards with neighbors. Local Democratic groups host postcard parties across Chicagoland, with recent ones in Lincoln Square, Uptown, Oak Park, and Winnetka. Hosts provide the cards, voter addresses, and scripts. The postcard guide explains how a party works.

Why Illinois Democrats volunteer next door

Illinois is not a swing state, so statewide races here are rarely decided by a few votes. Wisconsin races are routinely decided by less than 1%, and Michigan has a high-stakes U.S. Senate race and toss-up House seats. Chicago sits right at the border, which is why Illinois volunteers can supply decisive field capacity.

In 2024 our coalition mobilized ten thousand canvassing shifts and knocked a quarter million doors in Wisconsin and Michigan. Read more on our Illinois and Midwest strategy page, or see which states count as swing states and why.

Election Day is November 3, 2026. Here is how swing-state trips fit alongside local Democratic work in Illinois.

In Illinois

Local Illinois Democratic work

  • Run by your ward, township, or county Democratic organization.
  • Focused on Illinois candidates on your own ballot, plus petitioning and neighborhood turnout.
  • Close to home, often weeknights, and a good way to meet local organizers.
Next door

Swing-state trips with Operation Swing State

  • Canvass for Democrats in Wisconsin and Michigan races decided by narrow margins.
  • Weekend day trips with free carpools from Chicagoland hubs and training on site.
  • Phone banks and postcards reach the same voters if you cannot travel.

You do not have to choose. Many Illinois ward, township, and county Democratic organizations are coalition partners, and their members often fill our weekend carpools. If you have never knocked doors before, start with Canvassing 101.

Illinois midterm volunteer FAQs

Quick answers before you sign up.

What midterm volunteer opportunities are there for Illinois Democrats?

Illinois volunteers can ride in a free weekend carpool from Chicagoland to canvass for Democrats in Wisconsin or Michigan, join a virtual phone bank from home, or write postcards to swing-state voters at a local Chicago-area postcard party. Upcoming shifts for all of these are listed on this page and on Mobilize.

What political volunteer opportunities are there in Chicago?

Through Operation Swing State, Chicago-area volunteers can help Democrats in three ways: ride a free weekend carpool to canvass in Wisconsin, Michigan, or Iowa, make calls at a phone bank (most are in-person calling parties hosted by partner groups around Chicagoland, and a few are virtual), or write postcards to swing-state voters at a local postcard party. For campaigns inside Illinois, your ward, township, or county Democratic organization is the place to start.

How can I volunteer for Democrats in Chicago before the midterms?

Pick a shift from the upcoming list on this page and sign up through Mobilize. Election Day is November 3, 2026, and shifts run every weekend through the fall. Canvass carpools have left from hubs including Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Oak Park, Evanston, and Highland Park, and local Democratic groups host phone banks and postcard parties around Chicagoland.

How is this different from volunteering with my local Illinois Democratic organization?

Ward, township, and county Democratic organizations in Illinois mostly work on races inside Illinois: their own candidates, petition drives, and turnout in their neighborhoods. Operation Swing State sends Illinois volunteers to close races in neighboring states. Many of those local organizations are coalition partners, so you can do both, and their members often fill our carpools.

When are midterm volunteers needed most?

Election Day for the 2026 midterms is November 3, 2026. Shifts run every weekend through the fall, and the final weekends before Election Day, when campaigns focus on getting supporters to vote, are usually the busiest. Signing up early helps organizers plan carpools.

Is Operation Swing State part of the Democratic Party?

Operation Swing State is a volunteer-led coalition, not a single party committee. Its partners include Illinois Democratic ward, township, and county organizations, labor unions, and progressive advocacy groups, and its canvasses and phone banks support Democratic candidates.

Do I need experience or a car to volunteer?

No prior experience or personal car is required. Every canvass launch includes hands-on training, scripts, and buddy pairings for first-time volunteers, and we pair drivers who have extra seats with volunteers who need a ride.

Can I volunteer for the midterms from Chicago without a car?

Yes. Canvass carpools are free, and we pair drivers who have extra seats with volunteers who need a ride. Some Iowa shifts are drive-directly rather than carpools, so check the listing before you sign up. If you would rather not travel, a few phone banks are virtual, and local groups host in-person calling parties and postcard parties around Chicagoland.

Why travel to Wisconsin or Michigan when I live in Illinois?

Illinois is not a swing state, so volunteer time has the most impact in nearby swing states like Wisconsin and Michigan. Wisconsin and Michigan have races decided by razor-thin margins, and Wisconsin canvass sites are typically a 60- to 90-minute drive from Chicago.

Where do Chicago carpools depart from?

Carpool hubs have included Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Oak Park, Evanston, and Highland Park, plus partner hubs such as 46th Ward Dems, UChicago, and Northwestern for Michigan trips. The exact meeting point for each trip is listed on its sign-up page.

Can I volunteer from home?

Yes. Virtual phone banks start with a live Zoom training, and the automated dialer masks your personal phone number. You can also write postcards to voters at a local Chicago-area postcard party.

How do I sign up?

Pick a shift from the upcoming list on this page. Sign-ups are handled through Mobilize, and your chosen shift page will confirm the time and meeting place.
